The Process of Making 2024 Topps Dune Chrome
For Topps Art Director Jon Sprance, who helped shape the look and feel of the set, this project was something special.
“A lot of the process was helped by already having seen and been a fan of the movies,” Sprance said. “Then we got to nerd out looking through all of the awesome style guides and assets and think of all the cool ways we could incorporate everything together.”
That “nerding out” was key to the set’s authenticity. Sprance and the design team worked directly from the films’ visual references and production materials to ensure the cards reflected the depth and texture of the Dune universe.
“We did have to restrain ourselves a few times and adjust our designs to not overload them with too many elements,” Sprance explained. “But it was fun being able to lean into the themes of the cards by using specific art from the film.”
Giving Dune the Chrome Treatment
One of the most interesting challenges was merging the rugged, dusty environment of Dune with the polished elegance of Chrome technology. “Chrome is very shiny and clean, but the world of Dune is dirty and rough,” Sprance said. “We had to go through and experiment with ways of letting the chrome shine, but still keep the look appropriate.”
That experimentation extended to textures, foiling, and Refractors — all hallmarks of Topps Chrome. Sprance and his team spent considerable time testing how light would interact with the desert-inspired visuals. The goal was to create cards that didn’t just sparkle, but really felt like Dune.
“We had to find ways of letting the Chrome shine without it feeling out of place in this gritty world,” he said. “That contrast ended up being one of the coolest parts of the design process.”
Dune Favorites
When it came to choosing a favorite insert, Sprance was quick to answer. “Stillsuit Relic Card,” he said without hesitation. “This was highly stylized and we got to use some rarely seen assets and really lean into the stillsuit aesthetics.” The attention to detail in those cards — down to the texture and design language — became a signature moment for the set.
But the insert that Sprance believes will stand out to collectors for years to come is Dune Acrylics and its Dune Acrylics Autograph Cards counterpart. “The autograph cards are all very cool,” he said, “but I think the coolest one is the Dune Acrylics and the Dune Acrylics Autograph Cards. The characters really jump off the card, and the transparent backgrounds add a sense of depth with the sand dunes in the distance.”
For Sprance, the pride comes from seeing the final product live up to the source material. “The designs are all bold and striking, and feel like they naturally fit alongside the film,” he reflected. “We really worked hard to make sure the designs do the films justice.”
With its combination of cinematic visuals, innovative Chrome textures, and collectible artistry, 2024 Topps Dune Chrome® captures the soul of Dune in every card. It’s both a tribute to the films and a testament to the creative team’s ability to make science fiction shimmer — one card at a time.
