MINT LAB TOKYO has been at the forefront of establishing and nurturing Japan’s trading card culture since its inception in 1995. As part of the larger MINT chain, MINT LAB TOKYO serves as a central hub for hobby enthusiasts in the heart of the city. With a passion for enhancing the enjoyment of sports and entertainment through trading cards, the team at MINT LAB TOKYO continually strives to foster a sense of community and excitement around The Hobby. As they gear up for the highly anticipated Topps Hobby Rip Night this September, the store is set to create an unforgettable experience for collectors and fans alike. Let’s dive into a Q&A with the MINT team to learn more about their journey and future plans.

When did MINT LAB TOKYO open?

We opened our first MINT store in 1995, and this year marks our 30th anniversary overall. In addition to this MINT LAB TOKYO location, we have 27 other stores throughout Japan.

Why did you want to open a card shop?

We started our business to establish a trading card culture in Japan.

How did you get into The Hobby?

The release of official trading cards in Japan for Nippon Professional Baseball and J.League soccer was the catalyst. Being able to collect those players and those sets turned us into collectors.

What makes you the most excited about The Hobby?

We believe The Hobby significantly enhances the enjoyment of sports and watching films. Through cards, we’re able to extend and enhance what we’re passionate about. The greatest joy for us is sharing that enthusiasm with our customers.

What are your plans for Topps Hobby Rip Night?

Five store managers from our MINT chain stores in Tokyo will gather at MINT LAB TOKYO to organize a pack-opening event and giveaway. To make the pack-opening experience even more special, we are honored to have Hideki Okajima as a guest. Okajima contributed to the Boston Red Sox‘s 2007 World Championship victory and has also won NPB championships with three different teams in Japan. He serves as a commentator for professional baseball broadcasts for MLB and NPB, showcasing extensive knowledge of past and current players. His friendly personality and expertise make him the perfect guest to help create an exciting atmosphere for our first-ever Topps Hobby Rip Night alongside our customers.
