How Topps Created the Bowman Anime Kanji Variation
The 2026 Bowman Baseball release brings no shortage of buzz, but few inserts have captured The Hobby’s attention quite like the Anime Kanji Variation. Centered exclusively on Japanese players, the insert blends stylized anime-inspired artwork, Kanji name treatments, and Bowman’s familiar design language for an absolutely stunning result.
For Topps Product Manager Coby Kerr, the goal was to create something that felt distinct, premium, and purposeful.
The 2026 Bowman Baseball Anime Kanji Variation is a short-print insert featuring Japanese players with anime-style artwork and Kanji name designs. It blends bold visuals with Bowman’s classic layout, creating a fresh but authentic collectible that has quickly become a top chase among collectors.
A Fresh Take on Bowman Baseball
“The idea came from wanting a fresh, high-impact short print that still felt true to Bowman,” Kerr explained. “Anime gave us a bold, modern way to present players in a larger-than-life style, while still tying back to Bowman’s classic TV-frame heritage.”
That connection to Bowman’s past helped ground a concept that could have easily felt outside the product’s usual lane. Instead, the Anime Kanji Variation uses the familiar as a frame for something more expressive.
“Overall, the goal was to create something visually distinct that felt current and intentional,” Kerr said. “The Kanji variations were limited to Japanese players to keep the storytelling clear, focused, and intentional.”
Capturing the Right Style for the Anime Kanji Variations
The Anime Kanji Variation began with the challenge of presenting real players through a more dramatic visual lens. The artwork needed dynamism, but it also needed restraint. The card still had to feel like Bowman.
“We started with rough sketches focused on how to translate a player’s on-field presence into a more stylized, animated look,” Kerr said. “From there, we refined the art to balance energy and realism, making sure the player still felt recognizable.”
The creative team wanted the cards to feel unmistakably anime-inspired without locking the look to one specific reference point.
“We leaned into visual traits commonly found in anime, like strong motion, expressive poses, and clean line work, to give the artwork more energy without losing clarity,” Kerr explained. “The players were kept grounded and recognizable.”
That broader approach gave the insert room to feel cohesive across different players.
“The look was shaped more by broad anime themes, dynamic movement, dramatic posing, and clean, bold illustration, rather than pulling from any one creator or time period,” Kerr said.
Getting the Details Right
Bringing the anime artwork to life at card scale tested the Topps Design team, but the detail was worth it. “Anime illustrations rely on fine line work and motion,” Kerr explained, “so we had to carefully manage line weight, color, and contrast so nothing got lost during printing.”
The Kanji element required the same level of precision, with accuracy taking priority in every case. “We treated the Kanji as a direct phonetic translation of each player’s name,” Kerr said. “The priority was accuracy, making sure the name matched how it’s officially written and commonly used.”
That attention to detail helped the Anime Kanji Variation become more than a visual novelty. It gave collectors something new to chase while still fitting inside the established world of Bowman.
“We were hoping collectors would see these as something genuinely new, and exciting cards that stood out visually, but still felt premium and collectible within Bowman,” Kerr said. “So far, the response has matched that expectation. Anime quickly became one of the most talked-about and chased elements in the product, and the Kanji variations have been especially well-received.”
The Anime Kanji Variation works because it has a clear point of view. It’s focused in its checklist, bold in its artwork, and deliberate in its details, giving Bowman a new visual lane while keeping the insert firmly rooted in The Hobby.
