Recreating Collector Favorites for Finest Football
Topps Finest Football has always occupied a unique place in The Hobby, blending premium Chrome technology with fearless design experimentation. For the 2025 release, Senior Product Manager Wes Elliot and Associate Product Manager River Petty leaned heavily into that legacy, including some of the most recognizable insert concepts and visual identities from the 1990s while updating them for today’s collectors.
The result is a product built to evoke the excitement, unpredictability, and larger-than-life presentation that originally made Finest one of the defining brands of the Chrome era.
2025 Topps Finest Football revives the bold Chrome designs, oversized inserts, and experimental creativity that defined the brand during the 1990s. Featuring returning concepts like Centurions, The Man, and Team Finest, the release blends nostalgic visual identity with modern premium card technology for today’s collectors.
Bringing Back the Inserts that Defined Finest
The creative direction for 2025 Topps Finest Football started with a retrospective on the brand’s proyud legacy. “The 2025 product clearly focuses on the most recognizable elements of ’90s Finest,” Elliot explained. “Bold Chrome finishes, oversized insert branding, layered foil, and experimental themes.”
Those visual cues became the foundation for the product’s insert lineup, but certain names carried even more historical importance.
“1992 Finest, Centurions, The Man, and Team Finest felt like the essential callbacks because they directly connect to iconic Finest era collecting and Chrome history,” Petty said. The goal was for the release to instantly feel familiar to longtime collectors, while still standing out in today’s market, where visually explosive cards continue to thrive.
Designing for Both Nostalgia and Modern Collecting
While the insert names tap directly into collector nostalgia, the overall strategy for 2025 Finest Football was designed equally for new Hobby fans.
“The strategy was designed for both audiences at once,” Petty explained. “Longtime collectors recognize the historic insert names, while newer collectors are drawn to the bold designs.” That thinking also influenced the return of inserts like 1992 Finest and Landmark Metal Series, all of which reflect the loud visual identity and experimental creativity that made the 1990s Finest sets so iconic.
“The challenge was balancing the chaotic, experimental feel of ’90s Finest with the cleaner premium expectations of modern chrome products,” Petty said. Rather than recreating old inserts card for card, the team focused on preserving the personality and emotional connection collectors still associate with the era while modernizing the materials and presentation
That philosophy is especially visible in the Landmark Metal Series, which updates the metallic, technology driven obsessions of the 1990s through the use of actual metal cards.
Recreating the Feeling of Opening 1990s Finest Football Cards
Player selection became a major part of tying the past and present together. Rising stars like Caleb Williams, Cam Ward, Ashton Jeanty, and Jaxson Dart appear throughout the retro-inspired insert lineup, while legends such as Tom Brady, Jerry Rice, and Peyton Manning reinforce the connection to the original Finest era.
For Elliot and Petty, the continued popularity of these inserts comes down to how different they felt from everything else in The Hobby at the time.
“Collectors still connect to these inserts because they represent a time when card design felt experimental and surprising rather than standardized,” Elliot said. That spirit of experimentation is exactly what the team wanted to bring back in 2025 Topps Finest Football, creating a product that feels both familiar and fresh at the same time.
“Centurions probably captures the original Finest feeling best because it combines bold Chrome visuals, dramatic branding, and true ’90s style excess,” Petty added.
Whether it’s the return of iconic inserts, the Chrome-heavy presentation, or the blend of legends and rising stars, 2025 Topps Finest Football is designed to recreate the same sense of discovery and excitement that made opening Finest packs unforgettable during the original Chrome era.
