Building 2025-26 Topps Hoops Basketball
2025-26 Topps Hoops Basketball taps into energy, color, the overwhelming sense of excitement around today’s game. For Topps Art Director Tess Wieloszynski, the goal was to create an experience that feels as exciting to rip today as it would have years ago, back in the NBA Hoops heyday.
The result is a product that blends bold visuals, layered storytelling, and subtle nods to the past, while staying laser-focused on what has always made collecting the sport so fun.
2025-26 Topps Hoops Basketball delivers a vibrant, collector-focused experience with bold inserts, colorful parallels, and creative storytelling. Designed to balance nostalgia and innovation, the set features unique themes like Dunk-umentory and Finals Pursuit, making it appealing for both new collectors and longtime Hobby enthusiasts.
Recapturing the Energy of NBA Hoops
From the outset, the vision for Hoops was clear. “We wanted this product to be fun, lots of color, inserts that pop, and a few nods to basketball and collecting history,” Wieloszynski explained. With visual language leading the way, the team thought carefully about how the product would actually be experienced by collectors.
“We wanted it to be a product that has a little something for everyone,” Wieloszynski said, “a product we envisioned a kid may open up with their older sibling, or their parents, and everyone has a card or two they covet from the set.”
That idea of shared discovery plays a big role in how the set is structured, balancing approachable design with enough depth to keep seasoned collectors engaged.
A Wide Range of Inspiration
While 2025-26 Topps Hoops Basketball maintains a consistent tone, certain inserts step outside the traditional basketball card lane. “Maybe not the entire set,” Wieloszynski explained, “but there are a couple of stand-out inserts that pull inspiration from all over.” Boom-Shaka-Laka taps into music culture, for example, while Hard Wired introduces “a little hybrid of anime and graphic novel elements.”
Even with those influences, though, the throughline stays strong. “The guiding light was to make sure the product maintained that joyful spirit and never took itself too seriously,” Wieloszynski said — experimentation, but with a firm and consistent foundation.
Wieloszynski’s personal favorites highlight that range. “I’m a movie nerd, so I personally enjoy how Dunk-umentory turned out,” she said, pointing to the cinematic storytelling baked into the insert. “I’m also looking forward to seeing the Finals Pursuit inserts get pulled. I think that will be a fun card to chase and collect all of those iconic moments from the 2025 NBA Finals.”
Continuing the Topps Hoops Legacy
No two inserts follow the exact same creative path. “The process always changes a little bit from product to product and card to card,” Wieloszynski explained. Some ideas were locked in early, like Joy, where “we knew from the beginning that we wanted that card to focus on the photography so we can really let the celebratory moment captured from the game get all the attention.”
Others took shape through iteration. “The Buzz insert could have gone in any direction,” Wieloszynski said. “Do we feature a ‘buzzer beater’ moment, the actual buzzer, is it a viral buzz, or a buzzy headline?” The final concept pulls those threads together into “a collage of bees, newspaper headlines, and exciting moments in basketball,” giving the insert a layered, almost chaotic energy that mirrors the game itself.
Every concept was pushed to its natural conclusion, but always with balance in mind. “The challenge was to keep the product innovative, but still something friendly to people who have been collecting since they were a child,” Wieloszynski explained. This year’s mix of “patterned parallels, image variations, and bright colors,” keeps breaks unpredictable, while still grounding the set in familiar Hoops DNA.
Of course, the team also leaned into collector feedback. “There was a hunger for nostalgia, while still wanting something new, so we aren’t just ‘reheating old nachos,’” Wieloszynski said. That thinking led to inclusions like 1989 Signatures, which brings back “the famous (and one of my personal favorites) arched design from 1989.”
The Details That Reward a Closer Look
Beyond the headline designs, Hoops is packed with smaller elements that reveal themselves over time. Wieloszynski pointed to a few that stand out: “Dunk-umentory has a card back designed to look like a screenplay, Net 2 Net has a subtle basketball net texture that will pop on the parallels, and the linework on the base card is directly influenced by the lines on a basketball court.”
Those details speak to the larger design philosophy. “I try to remember that at the end of the day, the player on the card is the most important element,” Wieloszynski said. No matter how bold the concept becomes, it always serves that central focus. “The designs that we create should elevate the experience of collecting but should always highlight the team, the player, and the sport first. The experience and value for the collector is always the first priority.”
With 2025-26 Topps Hoops Basketball, that balance delivers a spectacular set of player images ripe for PCs, but with a visual dynamism that embraces the modern Hobby and the history of NBA Hoops.
