Stars Shine on the Track, Teams Move on in Medal Round
Team USA continued to strengthen its grip on the medal count in Paris yesterday. As of writing, the Americans lead with 86 medals, 26 ahead of second-place China. On the track, A shocking, underdog, come-from-behind gold medal run in the 1500-meter by American Cole Hocker and a dominant display from favorite Gabby Thomas in the 200-meter helped put Team USA in the lead for most gold medals heading into competition on Wednesday. Hocker, a 21-to-1 underdog, pulled off the biggest upset of the Paris Olympics so far. “Winning gold was my goal this entire year,” said Hocker. “I wrote that down, and I repeated it to myself; even if I didn’t believe it, I knew I was a medal contender, and I knew that if I got it right, it would be a gold medal. I’ve been saying that.”
The United States has the opportunity to build on the lead tonight, with 400-meter hurdles world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone set to compete in the finals against Dutch sensation Femke Bol.
Men’s Basketball dominated in a 122-87 win, led by LeBron James, who scored 12 points and nine assists. Next up is a semifinal against NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Women’s Soccer will face Brazil in the final after a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time win against Germany, thanks to a late Sophia Smith goal. The three-time defending Olympic champion Women’s Water Polo squeaked out a 5-4 win against Hungary. The team will play Australia in the semifinals on Friday.
