Things couldn’t have worked better for the newest club to enter MLS, San Diego FC. The 30th expansion in league history didn’t bow down to the defending MLS Cup Champions Los Angeles Galaxy, spoiling their home party with a 2-0 win.
The brand-new squad came out swinging in the first 45 minutes and continued to take advantage of every opportunity they could get in the second half. San Diego capitalized on a Galaxy defensive error, allowing Hirving “Chucky” Lozano to come away with the ball to assist Anders Dreyer for the franchise’s first-ever goal. The Danish midfielder’s score in the 57th minute will forever be tied to the club’s history as the first player to score.
Dreyer was hungry for more, finding the back of the net a second time on a masterful counter-attack in the closing minutes to ice the road victory. His performance cemented the team’s first-ever MLS win and made him the seventh player in league history to record multiple goals in a franchise’s inaugural match.
