10 Cards for the Long Holiday
As Labor Day 2023 rolls in with the aroma of grills and the hum of backyard gatherings, some of us are shuffling our playlists and our Allen and Ginter cards. No, they weren’t crafted just for Labor Day, but some of these gems surprisingly echo the very essence of the holiday! From cards that remind us of the iconic American worker to those that give a nod to our favorite holiday treats, it’s a deck where tradition unexpectedly meets modern revelry. In between flipping burgers and enjoying the last gasps of summer, why not flip through some cards that unintentionally but perfectly capture the Labor Day spirit?
2022 Topps Allen & Ginter Get That Bread #10 Hot Dog
Hot dogs, aka glizzys, are a Labor Day essential. Even if you have wings, steaks, or Earl Campbell’s at the function, roasted glizzies must be nearby. And make sure you have buns. Nobody wants unprotected glicks roaming the barbecue. It’s just not kosher.
2022 Topps Allen & Ginter Get That Bread #1 Burger
There’s no shame in quick and easy cookout essent, ials and burgers are another staple of a primetime Labor Day get down. Let’s be real. They’re crowd-pleasers among the kids. But make sure you have the appropriate condiments on deck. I’m basic, so I prefer just cheese and lettuce on my burger. But ain’t nothing wrong with a little dress up to kick up the flavor on your slab of beef. DO NOT FORGET THE BUNS!!
2022 Topps Allen & Ginter What’s Cookin’? #10 Cayenne Pepper
Eminem jumped on the track “Just Don’t Give a F*ck” and described himself as “flavor with no seasoning.” That might be one of the most self-aware bars in the history of hip-hop, so salute to Em. But don’t get any ideas thinking you could just hit the grill without the proper seasonings. Most flavor is, in fact, the byproduct of seasoning. Cayenne Pepper? A top-ranked seasoning that adds a kick to the meats of your choice.
2022 Topps Allen & Ginter What’s Cookin’? #11 Other Half BBQ Sauce
I couldn’t just post a card featuring Rodney Scott’s Other Half BBQ Sauce without Googling said sauce. I can’t lie. Pit Master Rodney Scott’s ribs look like slabs of heaven, and now I’m intrigued. Gotta respect the sauce. And check this out. The back of the card features the recipe. Dive in if you’re feeling adventurous.
2021 Topps Allen & Ginter #279 Trevor Lawrence
Now, if you’re asking what Trevor Lawrence has to do with Labor Day, I can answer that — nothing. But his Clemson Tigers open their 2023 season vs. Duke at 8 p.m. Eastern on ESPN, and it’s the only college football game of the day. Football season is finally here, ya’ll!!
2022 Topps Allen & Ginter Banner Season #5 Shohei Ohtani
We love sports, and we don’t care who knows!! And Ohtani is the best show in town. The Japanese slugger and the Angels face off vs. the Orioles at approximately 9:38 ET, so if you need a nightcap to go along with your football, food, and beer, tune into FS1 and watch as the biggest name in baseball continues his quest for his third consecutive AL MVP Award. Lil Wayne also knows a little something about a “3-Peat.” That track is a vital part of his discography.
2017 Topps Allen & Ginter #SFL-3 Sport Fish Fishing Lures Bluegill Spoon
Cookouts are great and all, but maybe you just want a relaxing day with little interruption. Grab your pole, hit the lake, and gon’ head and catch sumn’. Can’t go wrong with a day of fishing.
2022 Topps Allen & Ginter What’s Cookin’? #4 Hot Sauce
Condiments return on the list, and this one is for all my fire breathers. No matter how spicy the food, someone always wants to douse it in hot sauce. No lie, I know a few people who keep hot sauce in their purse. Shoutout to Beyonce. She keeps some hot sauce in her bag.
2007 Topps Allen & Ginter Mini Flags #50 United States
Ah, Labor Day: America’s way of honoring hard work by, ironically, doing absolutely none of it! Might be time to pull out the ole ‘Merican flag. A day off definitely deserves thanks.
2022 Topps Allen and Ginter #291 Rodney Scott
C’mon now. I couldn’t feature Pit Master Rodney Scott’s Other Half sauce without actually featuring the man behind the sauce. Now, he probably won’t be coming to your cookout. But there needs to be someone in attendance who can man the grill and get things poppin’. The Pit Master might be the most important person at the party.
