For Donato, there’s nothing quite like a shop, its employees, and the collectors all being in the room together for a big pull. “We can watch all kinds of platforms where people open boxes, YouTube, Fanatics Live, but when you actually see it in person, it’s really special,” he said.

Brick-and-Mortar Expertise

The excitement didn’t stop once the card hit the table. At AA Mint Cards, a big pull immediately kicks off a process the staff takes seriously.

“When they pull the card, we immediately look at the condition of the card, look at whether to grade it,” Donato said. “We’re there to give them that assistance.”

For the grading assessment itself, the GM is careful about what the shop can and can’t offer. “We’re not graders. We just give advice based on what we’re seeing.” Daniel, a longtime regular at AA Mint Cards, sent the Flagg off for grading not long after the pull.

Chasing 2025-26 Topps Finest Basketball

Donato loves the original 1990s Topps Finest sets, so the new release has been a personal standout. “It brings back that nostalgia that you love to see,” he said. “There’s been a lot of great feedback on it. People love it.”

While Cooper Flagg is the clear headliner, he’s not the only name people are hunting. “Flagg is the centerpiece of the rookie class, without a doubt,” Donato said. “But the way Knueppel has been playing is crazy. He’s become a huge chase. When customers open the product, they’re hoping for a Flagg or a Knueppel. Either one, they would be ecstatic.”

Beyond the rookies, the set’s veteran hits add another layer of chase. With LeBron autographs and stars like Victor Wembanyama and Steph Curry signing, Donato said there’s something worth hunting at every level of the product, alongside throwback insert concepts that longtime collectors enjoy.

AA Mint is a Hobby marvel. A family business owned by Mark and son Aaron, Donato joined the Hollywood, Florida shop in the run-up to the new location, built specifically to be the kind of place for the collector community to share in moments just like this one.

The current location opened in January 2024, developed from the ground up after the original shop quickly outgrew its space. The philosophy behind the expansion was to bring the local card shop into the 21st century, as Donato explained.

“What I like to say is, there were always taxis, right? Yellow cab taxis. Uber came and reinvented the way the taxi business did business. They didn’t do anything too different. But they basically moved it to the 21st century. It’s easier, more accessible, more personable. That’s kind of what I feel like we’ve done with Hobby shops.”

Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, jersey-wearing staff so customers always know who to approach; a breaking bar lounge with TVs and comfortable chairs where the whole shop can share in a rip; and a QR-code-driven card display system that lets any customer scan and instantly see its front, back, PSA population report, and estimated value on their phone. “We wanted to give every customer as much transparency regarding the cards they’re buying as possible,” Donato explained.
