Inside Topps Finest Premier League 2026
Topps Finest has always occupied a unique space in The Hobby, carrying a strong legacy from its ’90s origin. With the Topps Finest Premier League 2026 release — the debut of the Finest brand in England’s leading soccer competition series — that philosophy is on full display, blending bold modern aesthetics with unmistakable nods to the past.
The Topps Finest Premier League 2026 set blends retro-inspired designs with modern creativity, featuring bold inserts like Nightmare Fuel and Expected Brilliance. With a focus on nostalgia, innovation, and Premier League heritage, the release offers collectors a dynamic mix of past and present in one cohesive product.
To understand how this year’s set came together, we caught up with Topps Art Director Jay Thomson, who helped bring the vision to life.
Embracing the Finest of Past and Present
For the debut Finest Premier League set, it was important to capture the full history of the game, bringing in collectors of all generations. “Finest is quite a distinct collection,” Thomson explains. “This gives us the opportunity to showcase designs across decades, with modern cards as well as retro nostalgic vibes.”
That balance between past and present is what makes Finest stand apart. The brand’s identity, while recognizable, always leaves room for exploration.
“There’s a unique theme for Finest, although it’s not specifically defined,” Thomson says. “You can have a lot of fun with it, so leaning into that combined with the Premier League legacy was key for us.”
The result is a set that moves fluidly between eras, giving collectors something familiar and something new at the same time.
Pushing Creativity With Premier League Inserts
Where Finest really flexes its creative muscle is in its inserts, and this year’s lineup is one of the most diverse yet. Thomson highlights several standouts, each offering a different lens on what Finest can be.
“Nightmare Fuel is a great card,” he says. “Behind the scenes, it took a few iterations to nail the collective vision here, but it was worth pushing. We are happy with the striking outcome, and the parallels should look great too.”
At the same time, the set embraces the history of both Finest and Premier League football, pulling inspiration from iconic designs of the past.
“Finest Designs 1995-96 really leans into a ’90s nostalgic design, originating from Topps Basketball 1995, with subtle differences based on player position,” Thomson explains. “Pulling an autograph of one of the best players of the 90s would be awesome,” he noted.
Of course, modern football culture also plays a huge role, particularly in how analytics have influenced the way fans understand the game. “The (xB) Expected Brilliance insert is inspired by the ‘xG’ phenomenon and highlights attacking technical players with a chalkboard strategy design,” Thomson says. “Definitely one to look for.”
And then there are designs built purely to pop once collectors have them in hand, like the Polka insert. “It’s a quirky card,” Thomson says. “Simple, clean, but effective, with the Chrome substrate. It should be very eye-catching. Subtle detail too, it uses all colors from the Premier League palette!”
Together, these inserts showcase the full range of Topps Finest, from bold experimentation to thoughtful throwbacks.
The Details Bring it All Together
Creating this level of variety doesn’t come without challenges. Ensuring each insert feels distinct while still fitting within a cohesive product requires constant adjustment and collaboration.
“Creating variety across a set like Finest can be a challenge, but stepping back often and looking at it holistically always shows us where we can refine and differentiate,” Thomson says. “Our collaboration across departments, along the process, ensures we stay true, and in doing so, we harness the breadth of experience at Topps.”
As for hidden details, Thomson kept things close to the vest: “That would be telling, wouldn’t it!”
In the end, the success of a set like Topps Finest Premier League 2026 comes down to how it feels in the hands of fans, especially those who have been part of The Hobby for years. “Nostalgia is a big part of the journey for the more seasoned collectors, and this collection has a few lovely nods back to old designs,” Thomson says. “Hopefully that’s something they will enjoy.”
With Topps Finest Premier League 2026, that sense of nostalgia is balanced with bold creativity, delivering a set that reflects both where the game has been and where it’s going.
