As the Group stages conclude at UEFA EURO 2024\u2122, we look back at five cards that stood out for us. So far it’s been one for the underdogs, with some nations making it to the last 16 for the very first time! <\/p>\n\n

Marcel Sabitzer<\/h2>\n

Austria didn’t get the memo that this was the ‘Group of death’ as they topped the group ahead of tournament favorites France and a higher-ranked Netherlands. They also topped the group in style, with Sabitzer scoring an 80th minute winner to beat the Netherlands 3-2. Only Germany (8) scored more goals that Austria (6) in the group stages. <\/p>\n\n

Slovenia<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n

Joining Austria in the last 16 was Slovenia, who reached the knockout stages of a competition for the first time in their history. Often not spectacular, averaging 34.6% possession over their 3 games, Slovenia set themselves up to be hard to beat. They got their reward – with three draws enough to see them through as one of the best third-placed teams. <\/p>\n\n

Luka Modric<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n

It was a bitter sweet moment for Luka Modric when he scored against Italy to become the oldest player to score at the tournament. His goal could have been the one to send Croatia through to the last 16, however Italy were able to snatch a draw in the last minute of extra time. It’s likely to be Luka Modric’s last ever international tournament. <\/p>\n\n

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n

Despite it being Georgia’s first ever qualification for an international tournament, Willy Sagnol’s men were able to secure qualification to the last 16 after a hard fought victory against Portugal. Their talisman Kvaratskhelia – who was named Play of the Match – scored early to inspire his Country to their most famous win. <\/p>\n\n

Cristiano Ronaldo <\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n

Despite not having the impact Ronaldo would have demand of himself, the legendary forward still managed to break records. This time he became the first European player to make 50 major tournament appearances. Does he have a few more left in him? <\/p>\n\n
