In the storied history of Topps Chrome Basketball, two rookie classes stand out among the rest. There’s the class of 2003-04, headlined by LeBron James. And, of course, there’s the set that started it all — 1996-97 Topps Chrome Basketball — with a rookie class that more than met the moment. Led by Hobby superstar Kobe Bryant, the debut set’s rookies have remained influential in The Hobby for almost three decades now.

With the exciting release of 2025-26 Topps Chrome Basketball, a set which itself is led by a potentially generational rookie — Chrome cover athlete Cooper Flagg — it’s the perfect time to take a look at this year’s group of talented young stars and how they might compare to other great classes in Chrome.

Topps Chrome Basketball has produced some all-time rookie classes that still define The Hobby, led by 1996-97 (the debut Chrome set, led by Kobe Bryant) and 2003-04 (headlined by LeBron James, with fellow stars like Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony). With 2025-26 Topps Chrome Basketball led by cover athlete Cooper Flagg — and a deep rookie class behind him — collectors are already debating whether this new class can eventually belong in the same conversation as Chrome’s greatest rookie cohorts.

Chasing the 2025-26 Topps Chrome Basketball Rookie Class

It’s no surprise that most elite rookie classes are anchored by a true superstar — a face-of-the-league type talent around whom collectors can build a compelling collection. As mentioned, Kobe and LeBron most definitely fit the bill. The question for 2025-26 is this: Is Cooper Flagg him?

While it would be unfair to put too much on the young man’s shoulders, Flagg has certainly started to carry the load. Youngest player to score 35 points in a single game? Check. A few weeks later, Flagg became the youngest to put up 40. His well-rounded game and scoring potential scream franchise player, and early in his career, Flagg would seem to have a real shot at becoming the sort of Hobby anchor around which a set can orbit.

Dylan Harper’s potential has also flashed brilliantly in his early NBA career, and there’s no doubt that his ceiling is sky-high. An electric guard with poise and savvy, not to mention a bag for the ages, Harper likewise has a chance at greatness.

Strength in Numbers

Part of what makes the 2025-26 rookie class so exciting is the combination of elite talent and depth. Outside of the top two, rookies like V.J. Edgecombe and Kon Knueppel have already launched themselves into the brightest of lights with historic first-year performances, and their own Topps NOW® offerings.

While Ace Bailey gives fans in Utah a taste of what’s to come, there are players with clear star potential even further down the draft order. Derik Queen is an incredibly entertaining player who can do it all, including becoming the fifth-youngest ever to put up a 30-point triple double. Cedric Coward is wowing the city of Memphis and the basketball world with his versatile game.

There’s real reason to believe that the 2025-26 class has multiple players who could eventually start racking up All-Star and All-NBA honors. One day, we could look back and see that this class of Chrome belongs right up there with the very best.

The Iconic 2003-04 Topps Chrome Basketball Rookie Class

While it’s fun to debate potential and an exciting future, let’s make sure we give the old guard its flowers, too. The 2003-04 rookie class remains one of the most influential in modern NBA history. It all starts with The Kid From Akron, who hopped down the road to Cleveland after being selected first overall in the 2003 NBA Draft.

LeBron James has rewritten the history book on the floor, become a global icon off of it, and has some of the most sought-after cards in the history of the Hardwood Hobby. James’ top cards have frequently sold for six seven figures. His 2003-04 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor sold for almost $300,000 through Fanatics Collect in 2022.

More than two decades into his unprecedented career, James has set records for points scored and minutes played, while creating some of the most iconic moments in American sports this century, and he remains one of the most collected athletes in the world.

While James stands on top when it comes to the 2003-04 Chrome class, he’s joined by an incredible group of players. These include three-time champion, and one of the all-time great shooting guards, Dwyane Wade, with whom James and fellow 2003-04 rook Chris Bosh formed the Heatles, taking over the NBA in the early 2010’s.

LeBron’s earliest rival was fellow phenom Carmelo Anthony, who would go on to score 28,289 career points. A true hooper with an incredible scoring repertoire, Melo is another important piece of the basketball Hobby, with a legacy that’s lasted beyond his playing days.

All told, this fearsome foursome, who’ve combined for a remarkable 54 All-Star selections, led by one of the true GOATs in American sports history, make 2003-04’s Chrome class a tough one to beat.

The Original Rookies: 1996-97 Topps Chrome Basketball

The OG Topps Chrome Basketball set is rightfully lauded for its breakthroughs in card design and technology, helping to usher in the Chrome era. Still, the set need players and stars (and rookies) to truly shine. The 1996-97 Topps Chrome Basketball class helped lift the brand to great heights immediately. As the years have gone by, the set remains one of the most important trading card releases ever, thanks to the shine and a loaded rookie class.

Similar to LeBron in ’03-’04, Kobe rose to the very top of the class, the sport, and The Hobby. Helping the NBA move beyond the MJ years, Bryant’s success for one of the league’s flagship franchises helped turn the Lakers back into Showtime. Kobe’s 1996 Topps Chrome Basketball RC Refractor has sold for as much as $1.752 million.

The 1996-97 class is noteworthy for the incredible array of talent — Kobe, top pick Allen Iverson, smooth-shooting movie star Ray Allen, NYC legend Stephon Marbury, and two-time MVP and playmaking savant Steve Nash. Iverson, the 1997 NBA ROY and 2001 NBA MVP, was a near-mythical figure at his peak and a hugely influential cultural figure. This 1996 Chrome RC is one of his most valuable cards.

The1996-97 Chrome set checks so many boxes when it comes to Hobby rookie classes. It’s got a GOAT, cultural phenoms, MVPs, franchise players, and champions. And, if you’re looking for depth, the 1996 NBA Draft has a record 11 different players who were named as All-Stars at some point in their careers.

There’s high hopes for the rookie class of 2025-26 Topps Chrome Basketball, and while there’s reason to believe greatness is in the cards for many of these talented youngsters, 2003-04 and 1996-97 show just how high the bar remains when it comes to the greatest classes in Hobby history.
