Third Team Gold for USA in Last Four Olympics
The United States Women’s Gymnastics team put on a dominant performance yesterday en route to reclaiming their spot atop the Olympic podium. Team USA won silver in Tokyo three years ago after star Simone Biles withdrew from the competition. This time, Biles was back to her dominant self, putting on a show with a floor routine to close out the event. The gold medal was already in the bag when she took to the floor, but Biles’ impressive closing act was a fitting coronation for the woman who can rightfully be called the greatest gymnast of all time.
With the gold medal, Biles becomes the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history. But, while Biles took the headlines, this victory was a true team effort. Suni Lee, the defending individual all-round Olympic champion, was spectacular throughout, particularly on the beam, when she scored a 14.6 to steady American nerves after Jordan Chiles’ fall created the only real tension Team USA faced on the way to gold. Chiles herself put together a fantastic floor routine before Biles closed things out.
Suni Lee said, “We had the most fun I’ve ever had at a meet. It’s super special because we all knew how much we wanted it. We put in the work and did everything that we needed to do.” Italy won silver, its first in the event since 1928, while Brazil took home bronze.
