A Reverse Dutch Auction starts at a defined ceiling price and drops at scheduled intervals. Collectors can buy at any time while inventory lasts, and each buyer pays the price shown at the exact moment of their purchase. There is no clearing price, no bidding, and no retroactive price adjustments.
What’s a Reverse Dutch Auction?
A Reverse Dutch Auction is a timed auction format in which a product starts at a defined ceiling price. The price decreases at scheduled intervals. Buyers can purchase at any point while inventory remains.
In this format:
- Each buyer pays the price shown at the exact moment they purchase.
- Prices are not adjusted afterward.
- The auction ends immediately if the product sells out.
Note: This is different from a traditional Dutch Auction, where all buyers pay the same final clearing price.
First Day Issue (FDI) SKU Overview
FDI is a Topps.com–exclusive SKU that features exclusive content. FDI SKUs are limited to online-only products.
FDI SKUs are also intended to arrive before their corresponding Hobby SKUs.
For example:
- 2025-26 Chrome Basketball FDI is intended to arrive on December 15
- 2025-26 Chrome Basketball Hobby is designed to arrive on December 18
How a Reverse Dutch Auction Works
- The auction opens at a defined ceiling price.
- No bids or competing inputs — the price is displayed publicly.
- Price decreases occur at scheduled intervals.
- Buyers may purchase at any time.
- Inventory determines the end of the auction.
- If the product sells out before the planned final drop, the auction closes immediately.
- Buyers pay their moment-of-purchase price.
- There is no clearing price and no retroactive adjustment if the price drops later.
- Purchasing rules are fixed for each SKU:
- One auction per SKU
- Box-level purchasing only
- Defined purchase limits
- Expected duration under two hours unless sold out sooner
- No refunds due to later price drops
What Collectors Should Know Before Participating
- The product may sell out before reaching a lower price tier.
- Buyers who want to secure inventory early can purchase at any time.
- Buyers who wait for later price drops risk missing out.
- Each purchase is final at the price shown at checkout.
