Frontline Pitching Talent Still Available
Major League Baseball’s trade deadline hits at 6:00 PM EST today as teams scramble to improve or offload and set themselves up for the home stretch. While some teams got their business done early, like the Seattle Mariners, who added 2023 All-Star outfielder Randy Arozarena, others still have work to do.
While Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays is the best hitter rumored to be available, some frontline starters may become the story of the day. Two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell has looked much better of late for the San Francisco Giants and could command a solid return.
Perhaps the biggest arm on the market is current AL Cy Young-betting favorite Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers. The 27-year-old is under team control for two more seasons, so a deal would have to be huge to get the Tigers to part with their ace. The Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers are considered potential destinations.
Then there’s Garrett Crochet of the fire-selling Chicago White Sox. The AL strikeout leader has created a stir by wanting a contract extension as part of any potential deal if he is to pitch into October. White Sox GM Chris Getz admitted, “It created some questions. The short-term and long-term consequences are unknown.” The Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves are rumored to be interested.
