Vintage Baseball Pieces Highlight Auction
Memory Lane is bringing the heat with its next offering.
The California-based auction house will feature rare items such as a game-used Babe Ruth bat, Lou Gehrig rookie card, a “Moonlight” Graham postcard, and plenty of Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Honus Wagner cards.
The Summer Rarities Auction 2024 includes over 1,700 high-end lots and will run Aug. 17-Sept. 7.
The showstopper in the auction is the beautiful piece of Ruth lumber. Gifted to New York Yankees teammate Mark Koenig, the Ruth bat — a Hillerich & Bradsby Louisville Slugger Model R34 — was used in 1928-29. The Bambino’s bat measures at 35 inches and 41.2 ounces.
Another great piece in the auction is Gehrig’s true rookie card. The 1925 Exhibit Supply Co. Gray Tint is a magnificent example, graded a PSA 3.5. PSA has only graded 46 copies, with a 6 garnering the highest mark.
Archibald “Moonlight” Graham became a household name to baseball fans when the movie “Field of Dreams” was released. Graham enjoyed a cup of coffee at the big-league level, before being sent back to the minor leagues. In all, Graham played in the minors for seven years but never got another shot at the big leagues. Memory Lane is offering a 1908-09 Rose Company postcard of Graham, graded PSA authentic altered. Displaying bursting green color throughout the piece, it is the only Graham postcard ever graded by PSA.
Another pre-war standout card is Buck Ewing’s 1888-89 Old Judge Cabinets 149-8. Showing Ewing leaning on a bat in his right hand, earning a 4 grade, it is the lone example ever inspected by PSA.
