Part 2 of Father–Son Duo Who Pulled Massive Card

After nearly a year of waiting, Brett and Jeremy Sagray finally received the LeBron James Time Machine SuperFractor Auto they pulled on Brett’s 14th birthday. From FedEx delivery day to their plans for PSA and beyond, this father–son duo’s story shows how a once-in-a-lifetime hit can reshape a collection and strengthen a bond.

When Brett Sagray pulled a LeBron James redemption card from his birthday break last year, he and his dad, Jeremy, knew they had something special. What they didn’t know was how long the wait would be before the card itself arrived.

“It took nearly a year,” Jeremy recalled. “Every day, Brett would ask me, ‘Hey Dad, where’s that card?’ And I’d tell him, ‘We’ll get it. LeBron’s got to sign it first.’”

Finally, the wait ended. Delivered securely by FedEx, the 2023/24 Topps Chrome Basketball 2003–04 Time Machine Autograph Variation SuperFractor Parallel — featuring LeBron James bedecked in his draft night white suit from 20 years earlier — became reality.

“When it showed up, it took everything to a whole other level,” Jeremy said. “Brett could finally sense that he really did pull something pretty cool.”

From Redemption to PSA

Owning a card of this magnitude changes how you think about collecting. Jeremy and Brett had always ripped for fun — hunting cool cards, making memories, and sharing the thrill. But with this card, there’s more at stake.

“I’m tempted to fly it out to California,” Jeremy said. “You can do a walk-in on Wednesday at PSA. My daughter loves USC, so we thought about making a trip out of it. I just don’t want to risk shipping it.”

The family is still weighing their options. Jeremy admits they’re not “big collectors” in the business sense, but they understand the card’s value and importance.

“Rather than us keeping it in a safe, I’d rather see it go to someone who really wants it — someone who will appreciate it,” Jeremy said.

More Than Just a Hit

For Jeremy, the story behind the card is just as important as the card itself. The pull happened at SportsCards Plus in San Antonio, owned by longtime shop owner Charlie DiPietro.

“To me, that’s what makes this special,” Jeremy said. “The stars aligned. Same shop, same hobby — but now it’s me and my son making that memory.”

Jeremy grew up visiting SportsCards Plus with his own father, and decades later, it’s still the hub where San Antonio collectors gather. Having Brett’s once-in-a-lifetime hit come from the same shop gave the moment extra meaning.

“We wanted to make sure credit was given where we got the card,” Jeremy explained. “It came from Charlie’s store, and we wanted that connection remembered.”

Even Charlie, who’s famously laid-back, kept his cool when seeing the card again. “That’s cool,” he reportedly said — a simple reaction that contrasted with the whirlwind the Sagrays felt.

What Comes Next

The Sagrays may ultimately part with the card — to help fund Brett’s college, or to pass it on to a serious LeBron collector who can steward it long-term.

“Honestly, it’s like winning the lottery,” Jeremy said. “But at the end of the day, it’s about the story we can tell — father and son, pulling the chase card together. That’s what makes it unforgettable.”

  • What is the LeBron James 2003/04 Time Machine Auto SuperFractor?
    • A SuperFractor is a 1/1 parallel card. The LeBron James Time Machine Auto SuperFractor in 2023/24 Topps Chrome Basketball commemorates James’ rookie card from 2003/04 Topps Basketball.
  • How does a redemption card work?
    • With redemption cards, the collector exchanges or “redeems” the card with Topps and receives a hit (typically, autographed) card at a later date. Modern redemption cards feature a code printed on cardstock, and the owner redeems their card by simply submitting the code through the Topps website. For further information, visit Topps here.
  • Why grade a card?
    • Grading ensures authenticity, protects condition, and establishes market value — especially for ultra-rare 1/1s.
  • Is this card going up for sale?
    • Brett and Jeremy haven’t made that decision yet. But they’d like the LeBron SuperFractor to end up in the collection of a serious LeBron fan.
