Collecting the King’s Legacy in Cards
The Kid from Akron who became King James has a legacy that speaks for itself. From generational prodigy to face of the NBA, four-time MVP, and four-time Champion, to all-time leading scorer, Olympic flagbearer, and taking the floor with his son, LeBron James’ career in basketball is unprecedented.
The combination of historic domination and unrivaled longevity has kept LeBron at the top of the sports world — and the card world — for over two decades now.

Now, with the recent release of 2025-26 Topps Basketball, LeBron is once again showing the power of a King. From his new batch of Topps autos with the Lakers to an array of other fantastic chase cards, it’s still the King’s court.
Let’s take a look at just some of LeBron’s highlights in The Hobby and some exciting new cards of the King.
A Chrome Debut for the Ages
More than 20 years later, 2003-04 Topps Chrome® Basketball remains one of the most important sets in the history of the hardwood Hobby. LeBron James, the consensus top overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, is a massive reason why.
Alongside the likes of Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh, LeBron headlined an absolutely loaded rookie class. James’ 2003 Topps Chrome RC is among his most iconic and valuable cards. The Gold Refractor version of the card, limited to only 50 copies, has sold for as much as $1.2 million.
Then there’s this gem from 2003 Topps Basketball, showing James in his fashionable draft night outfit holding the jersey he would make famous.

In a display of LeBron’s mind-boggling longevity, two decades later, Topps Released a Time Machine Autograph Variation SuperFractor LeBron James card, with James once again back in a brilliant white suit. This time, though, instead of his rookie jersey, he’s holding a piece of paper announcing his 40,000th scored point as an NBA player.

2008: The Hits Keep Coming
In 2008-09, James won his first of four MVP’s in a five-year stretch, helping to establish him as the defining player of his era. Again, Topps met the moment with a LeBron card featuring one of the greatest card images ever of a superstar coming into his prime.
James’ 2008-09 Topps Basketball entry, known to some as ‘The Chalk Toss Card’ is often cited as a collector favorite. Capturing LeBron in his iconic pregame routine, King James looks larger than life, the deserved center-of-attention under the lights before tipoff.
It was during these years that the “LeBron or Kobe” debate raged around the basketball world. The pair were even portrayed in a famous run of Nike ads, with puppets of LeBron and Kobe engaging in some good-natured banter. Topps Chrome stepped up as well, with this phenomenal 2008-09 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant that shows the Lakers legend being guarded by the young MVP coming for his crown.
LeBron in Paris
Today, James remains one of the most important players in the entire Hobby, and in terms of basketball, he only trails Michael Jordan on Card Ladder’s total market cap stat column.

Recent James cards from Topps include a selection of Topps NOW® cards released in commemoration of his historic selection as the U.S. Olympic Team flagbearer alongside tennis sensation Coco Gauff. A triple card featuring the old guard of NBA superstars — James, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant — became one of the hottest cards from the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Still the King
In yet another testament to LeBron’s unmatched staying power, his offerings in the newly released 2025-26 Topps Basketball set are among the most sought-after of the historic release. To begin with, there’s the exciting news that the set has the first-ever NBA-licensed Topps auto cards of LeBron as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the league’s flagship franchises.

This throwback card with a 45th Anniversary stamp was one of the big chase cards, and it was recently pulled by a collector from West Virginia.

The highly popular All Kings insert has crossed into the Topps Basketball landscape, making its bow on the hardwood. LeBron’s card from this insert is unsurprisingly a highly sought-after addition for many collectors of The King.

For a taste of LeBron Hollywood, there’s a beautiful Home Court Lebron card. A case-hit insert card, Home Court puts players in the heart of the city they competing for. James’ entry has a Highway 23 sign, palm trees, and of course, a crown.

Who doesn’t think of LeBron as a living legend? Who doesn’t think of King James as a superhero? His rare Comic Court card is a wonderfully stylized addition to any LeBron collection.

For a more classic feel, fans of the purple-and-gold have a chase card to call their own, with James’ Team Color Border Variation card. Color matches are always a fun way to accentuate the fandom behind a collection, and this card gives Lakers loyalists another beautiful card to hunt down.

LeBron’s 2025 Topps adventure is only beginning. As he continues to amaze and assert his own brand of dominance on the sport, the culture, and The Hobby, fans and collectors can keep on watching his brilliance, and keep on collecting his cards.
