Brits Set for Showdown vs. Italy
England is heading to its second straight European Championship final after a last-minute goal from substitute Ollie Watkins gave the Three Lions a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday.
The Dutch side went ahead in the seventh minute after young star Xavi Simons rifled in a shot from outside the box. England responded well, and the team’s improved play was rewarded 10 minutes later when captain Harry Kane earned and converted a penalty. An exciting first half ended tied 1-1.
In the second half, England began to withdraw and play more defensively, as the British players noticeably began to tire. The advantage seemed to be with the Dutch, especially considering that England was coming off back-to-back knockout games that went to extra time. However, the well-organized English defense kept the Netherlands at bay. With 10 minutes to go, England manager Gareth Southgate brought on Cole Palmer and Watkins to provide a lift. The changes paid off, as Palmer provided the assist on Watkins’ game-winning goal.
Now, England’s attention turns to tournament-favorite Spain, in a highly anticipated final that will take place on Sunday in Berlin. England seeks redemption following a heartbreaking loss in the last Euro final, where it was defeated at home by Italy in a penalty shootout. This will be the third matchup between the teams in European Championship history, with England winning the previous two in 1980 and 1996. A victory by Spain would give the nation the most ever Euro titles with four.
