Bowman Chrome® Baseball is one of The Hobby’s most anticipated products each year. Known as the premium set for prospecting, it’s where collectors chase the rookies and prospects they believe will become tomorrow’s stars.

Topps Art Director Adam Schwartz takes us behind the design of 2025 Bowman Chrome Baseball, the premier prospecting set. From bold parallels to inventive subsets like It Came to the League and Melt Mashers, the release balances tradition with innovation while spotlighting rookies and prospects.

“The biggest challenge is keeping the product fresh year over year,” Schwartz explained. “Many subsets carry over, and coming up with a new look for the same subset can be a challenge. As designers, we need to take the previous year’s design and evolve it into something completely different.”

Balancing Tradition and Prospecting

With Bowman Chrome’s reputation as the premier prospecting product, Schwartz makes sure the design highlights the subjects at hand. “I like to make sure that the player image is clear and recognizable so that the players are the first thing people see,” he said. “Because this is the ‘prospecting product,’ we want the collectors to find who they are looking for.”

Beyond the photography, the designs also need to feel cohesive across the checklist. “We want the designs to be easily distinguishable from each other,” Schwartz noted. “Once we design a few subsets, we look at them all together to ensure that they all have their own look but fit together as a whole. I like to say that all the designs belong to the same family but are all their own person.”

Creative Flows

Each Bowman Chrome release carries a mix of tradition and experimentation. For 2025, Schwartz highlighted one design as a personal favorite. “One of my favorite cards to design is the ‘It Came to the League’ subset — a play on old school movie posters.” Of course, every subset in the product was carefully crafted to give collectors something truly special.

“Another design that stands out to me was created by one of my team members, Brady Carlson,” Schwartz said. “He designed the Melt Mashers subset. It’s a vibrant card with tons of color and shapes. I think seeing it on Chrome is going to really make it come alive.”

Bowman Chrome has also embraced creative collaborations, including the Garbage Pail Kids crossover, which has become a favorite for collectors. “Bowman GPK is created by the GPK artists,” Schwartz said. “They supply us with the art and we get them production-ready. The collectors love them, which is why we have been continuing this subset. I think the results are a lot of fun and give the collectors something else to chase that’s not a traditional baseball card.”

How Bowman Chrome Baseball Still Stands Out

Parallels remain central to the Chrome identity. From Refractors to SuperFractors, Schwartz ensures they carry the bold appeal collectors expect.

“When I am the art director of a project, I like to make sure that the parallels are strong,” he said. “I want to make sure that as soon as you see a card, you know if it’s a parallel.” That attention to detail ensures Bowman Chrome maintains its signature look, while leaving room for new creative directions. Each year builds on the past but pushes into fresh territory, keeping collectors engaged.

Behind every Bowman Chrome release is a careful balance of tradition and innovation. For Adam Schwartz, that means honoring the product’s role as the premier prospecting set while daring to experiment with bold new looks. From movie-poster-style inserts to Chrome parallels that shine instantly, 2025 Bowman Chrome continues the legacy collectors expect while offering designs that feel distinctly new. As Schwartz put it best, all the cards belong to the same family, but each has its own personality.
