Inside 2026 Topps Disney Neon
Working on a Disney-licensed product carries a level of meaning that goes beyond design. For Topps Senior Art Director Ryan Lee, the opportunity is deeply personal. “It’s a dream,” he said. “It’s something that was always on my bucket list when I was a junior designer back in 2012.”
That sense of fulfillment is tied closely to the scope of what Disney represents. “The amount of intellectual properties Disney owns reveals just how vast their audience is,” Lee said. “From the Disney Channel, to classic cartoons, to modern live action remakes, Disney covers it all, and Topps gets to celebrate it.”
The weight of that responsibility shapes the design work on any Disney product. And with 2026 Topps Disney Neon, that work is bigger and more colorful than ever before.
2026 Topps Disney Neon reshapes the Disney trading card experience with fresh, modern designs for a massive cast of beloved characters new and old. Helmed by Topps Senior Art Director Ryan Lee, the new release captures all the magic of Disney with a look fit for 2026 collectors.
Defining Disney Neon
“The core vision behind Disney Neon is to bring to life the colorful array of characters that Disney owns,” Lee explained — “To showcase them in a way Topps has yet to give our fans.”
That direction led to the development of a bold and cohesive visual identity. The neon aesthetic became the foundation of the product. Bright color palettes, glowing accents, and layered lighting effects create a sense of energy across the entire set.
The approach required careful consideration. The team needed to ensure that the neon treatment enhanced the characters, rather than distracting from them. Every element had to support the subject. At the same time, the product expands the range of Disney properties represented.
“It’s been fun getting to expand our portfolio and feature Disney licenses that we have yet to give our collectors,” Lee said. For example, 2026 Topps Disney Neon features a new insert focused on Phineas and Ferb. “We get to showcase this cast for the first time,” Lee said. “Centered around the scientific brainiacs that are Phineas and Ferb, we got to tailor the design for their world.”
That level of customization reflects a broader philosophy — one where each property is approached individually, rather than forcing everything into a uniform structure.
Designing Disney with Purpose
Even with a strong lineup of inserts, the base set remains central to the product. It represents the clearest expression of the overall design philosophy. “The design really brings to life each and every character,” Lee said, “with colored frames that help to compliment each and every subject, glowing design elements that exude the neon theme, and a design that simply showcases what the fans want: the character art.”
While the design is strong, it was important to never overwhelm the subject. The same mindset carries into how the team approached inserts and subsets — each adding another layer to the product without straying from the core identity.
Balancing Creativity and Authenticity
Working within the Disney ecosystem requires a clear understanding of boundaries. Creativity is encouraged, but it must exist within the established identity of each character. “As we gain experience working with and designing for the Disney license, we’ve learned how Disney and the studios like to honor character narratives, and this has been a focal point to our design process,” Lee said.
That understanding shapes every stage of development. “We want to spin how these characters are showcased,” Lee explained, “but we do not want to manipulate how the characters are portrayed. It’s a balancing act.”
