Some ideas don’t need to be reinvented. When Topps set out to create the Tecmo Super Bowl insert for 2025 Topps Chrome Football, the goal was not to modernize one of the most iconic football video games ever made, but to capture something familiar and translate it into The Hobby without losing its identity.

The 2025 Topps Chrome Football Tecmo Super Bowl insert is a nostalgic tribute to the iconic video game, featuring pixel-based designs, touchdown screen visuals, and unique autograph variations. By blending retro gaming aesthetics with Chrome technology, the insert delivers a familiar yet innovative collector experience.

For football fans of a certain era, Tecmo Bowl is a shared memory — pixelated visuals, simple mechanics, and iconic in-game moments. From the jump, the design team’s goal was preserving that specific feeling on Chrome.

Topps & Tecmo Bowl: Continuing a Legacy

From the beginning, the team understood that the insert needed to center around the most recognizable moment in the game. “We anchored the final design on the game’s touchdown and celebration screen,” Topps Product Director Tim Yoder explained.

Rather than building outward with modern embellishments, the design starts with the nostalgic look of the game. For Topps Graphic Designer Preston Linzy II, that foundation introduced a different kind of challenge.

“It was an interesting experience, especially considering how huge Tecmo was back in the day,” Linzy said. “It was like the predecessor to a lot of the modern games in the genre, and it has a rich history that we wanted to respect when creating the cards.”

Tecmo Bowl is defined by its pixelated aesthetic. Chrome is defined by its shine. Bringing those two elements together required more than layering one on top of the other.

“When it came to the engineering aspect of the card design, it was interesting to see how pixels interacted with the Chrome substrate,” Linzy explained. “Pixels, by design, have a grid system that they follow, and that allows for glints of the chrome to shine through the player silos, which you don’t often see in cards these days.”

That interaction became the defining visual layer of the insert. The pixel grid allows light to break through the Chrome in ways that feel intentional and controlled. The result is a layered card that maximizes both elements.

An Homage, Not a Reimagining

At no point was the goal to reinterpret Tecmo Bowl for a modern audience, or to update it to match contemporary design trends. The objective was to preserve what made it recognizable and allow it to exist within a new medium.

“The objective we wanted to achieve with these cards was for them to be more of an homage to the original games than a reimagining,” Linzy said. “So the elements present on the cards are depictions that mirror the games from the past, with those visual sensibilities applied to modern players as well.”

That distinction keeps the insert grounded in its source material, while still feeling relevant within The Hobby. Modern players are placed inside a visual system that collectors already understand, creating a bridge between eras.

The most telling examples of that approach appear in the smallest details, particularly in the autograph variations.

“The cool addition to the autograph variants of these cards is the inclusion of the ‘TOUCHDOWN’ text that shows on screen after a score,” Linzy said. “In the spirit of staying true to the touchdown screen, the autograph area was made black. This allows for autographs to be signed in white ink instead of the usual blue, which is pretty unique.”

It’s a subtle shift, but one that reinforces the entire concept, capturing the feeling of actually sitting down and playing the game.

A Shared Nostalgia on Topps Chrome

Part of what makes the Tecmo Super Bowl insert resonate so naturally is the shared experience behind it. That extends to the members of the design team, as well as the larger fanbase.

“I think every ’80s kid remembers Tecmo,” Yoder said. “There’s a real personal nostalgia factor there.”

That familiarity carries through the design in ways that are difficult to manufacture. It allows the insert to connect across generations, speaking directly to collectors who grew up with Tecmo Bowl, while still introducing its visual language to a new audience.

The Collector Experience

At the end of the day, the success of the insert comes down to how it feels once it leaves the design phase and lands in a collector’s hand. The card style, the technical execution, and the classic aesthetic all have to translate into something tangible.

“They look great in-hand and feel genuinely nostalgic,” Yoder said. “I think it’ll bring back a lot of fond memories for collectors.”

That’s the goal: not just recognition, but reconnection. The Tecmo Super Bowl insert doesn’t try to be something new for the sake of it. It understands the value of memory and translates it into a format that fits seamlessly within The Hobby.
