Behind the Design of 2025 Marvel Comic Book Heroes 1975 Golden Anniversary
When it comes to blending nostalgia with innovation, Topps Art Director Jon Sprance knows the balancing act well. For the upcoming 2025 Marvel Comic Book Heroes 1975 Golden Anniversary release, Sprance and his team revisited one of Marvel’s most beloved designs from the mid-1970s, bringing it into the Chrome era without losing its vintage soul.
Topps’ 2025 Marvel Comic Book Heroes 1975 Golden Anniversary set revives Marvel’s iconic 1970s sticker designs in Chrome. With a 150-card base checklist, autographs, and artwork spanning 1975, 1976, the 2000s, and brand-new 2025 characters, it blends nostalgia with modern shine for Marvel collectors.
While the set does include autographs, its foundation is the art-driven base checklist. “There aren’t really any inserts here, just the Base Cards,” Sprance explained. “I love being able to create designs that are outside of the norm. Here we don’t even have character names or any other information on the card fronts, it’s just a big piece of art as the main feature.”
Chrome Technology Meets Nostalgia
The 150-card base set spans multiple eras of Marvel storytelling. Collectors will see the 1975 originals faithfully recreated alongside the 1976 sequel designs, while Marvel art from the 2000s adds another visual layer. New 2025 cards introduce characters like Spooky-Man, All-New Venom, and Spider-Punk, each styled to echo the retro look. By weaving together four eras, the set celebrates Marvel’s evolving artistry across 50 years.
Honoring that history while embracing Chrome technology was no easy task. “The goal was to preserve the feel of the original 75 as close as possible but find a way to utilize the chrome to make these feel extra special,” Sprance said. “The real challenge was figuring out how to get the newer art to match the look of the,75s and we had to rebuild the black ‘sticker’ border so that it matched.”
Recreating the 1975 Sticker Border
That border became a creative flashpoint. At one stage, the team considered removing it entirely, but something was missing. “The Stickers that weren’t actually stickers anymore,” Sprance recalled. “We went through a couple of variations where we had no black sticker border, but it just didn’t have the same impact.” The restored border ultimately grounded the nostalgic feel while letting Chrome elevate the presentation.
Another challenge was sourcing the art itself. Without the original 1970s files, the team hunted down the best surviving examples of the stickers. “The hardest part was finding the best versions of the original stickers to reprint since we don’t have the original art available,” Sprance said. The extra effort preserved the vintage texture while layering in gold tones, refractors, and Chrome’s trademark shimmer.
Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future of Marvel Cards
For Sprance, the set is as much about inspiring future innovation as it is about honoring the past. “Honestly, I hope that people like the look enough that we get to actually make some real stickers in the future,” he said. “I’ve always loved it when a product has some quirky inserts or unusual tech that make it stand out from the rest.”
By combining four eras of Marvel design with the shine of Chrome technology—and layering in modern autograph chases—Marvel Comic Book Heroes 1975 Golden Anniversary is more than a trading card release. It’s a living tribute to Marvel’s artistic history and a bold step forward in how those stories can be collected, displayed, and remembered.
