Lakers Select Bronny to Team Up with Dad
The 2024 NBA draft concluded on Thursday and, unsurprisingly, the biggest story emerged out of Los Angeles. The Lakers picked Bronny James, son of current Laker LeBron James, No. 55 overall. While this was the worst-kept secret in sports, there is no doubting the historic nature of the selection. The James’ can become the first father-son duo to play in the same game in NBA history.
LeBron and Bronny they would also become the fifth-ever father-son combo to compete alongside each other in American sports history. The last to do it was Tim Raines Sr. and Tim Raines Jr. for the Baltimore Orioles in 2001.
While expected, the selection of Bronny late in the second round was not without controversy. He played a limited role in his only season at USC, and some scouts suggested he should go undrafted. However, Bronny’s freshman year was not an easy one, as he did not make his debut until mid-December 2023 after suffering cardiac arrest in July.
Bronny may be in the perfect spot to reach his potential; the Lakers should give the 19-year-old every opportunity to develop and ultimately succeed. He projects as a 3-and-D guard, a position of ever-increasing need in the modern NBA. Fans will get their first look at Bronny in a Lakers uniform in mid-July when summer league play kicks off.
