Bowman Baseball’s place in The Hobby is unquestioned. In many cases, a player’s 1st Bowman card is the most sought-after and valuable of all — considered the player’s first official baseball card, released before their rookie card. The Bowman brand has become synonymous with prospects and the future of baseball and The Hobby.

Today, Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographed and Non-Autographed cards are an essential piece of the Bowman universe, creating some of the great chases in the modern baseball Hobby. As The Hobby readies for the May 7 release of 2025 Bowman Baseball, let’s look back to 2001, a hugely influential year for the brand.

Bowman Rookie Autos and Albert Pujols

2001 was a year of firsts for Bowman Baseball. As the first year that Bowman Chrome Baseball included base set autographed cards, the set serves as a key offering in the history of the brand. Premium prospect autographed cards played a major role in the set, with the debut of 20 Rookie Auto Refractors, each numbered to 500. These cards did not have a 1st Bowman designation, as those did not become a staple of Bowman sets until 2003. Instead, they are designated as rookie cards.

Among the rookie cards was what became perhaps the Albert Pujols grail: 2001 Bowman Chrome Baseball #340. The card was actually released by redemption, with exchange cards placed in packs. As with the other Rookie Auto Refractors, the cards were numbered to 500. Per Card Ladder, it remains the biggest sale of an Albert Pujols card of all-time, going for $462,000 in 2022. Eight of the 10 largest Pujols sales are of this 2001 Bowman Chrome Baseball autographed card.

The card backs featured the now-common “Bowman Briefing,” offering a scouting-report style that helped to increase the prospect feel of these Bowman rookie cards. Pujols’ was prescient, describing the youngster as the “complete hitting package.”

Pujols RC super collector Jeremy Lawson told Topps RIPPED his PSA 9 and PSA 8 versions of this card are his favorite among all the Pujols rookies he has in his PC. The card remains one of the most important of the 21st century.

Ichiro Suzuki Made a Huge Bowman Splash in 2001

Then, there was Ichiro. The Japanese superstar signed for the Seattle Mariners before the 2001 season and became an instant sensation, while putting up one of the greatest rookie campaigns in the history of American sports. Ichiro was the first rookie to lead All-Star voting. He went on to win both the AL Rookie of the Year and the AL MVP. The 2001 Bowman Chrome Baseball #351 may just be the most famous Ichiro card of all-time.

Ichiro’s card was also released through a redemption program. It included a card back variation, in which one version of the card came with English text and the other with Japanese. The card back describes Ichiro as the “Japanese Tony Gwynn.’

Unlike Pujols’ entry, Ichiro’s was also part of a Gold Refractor parallel release numbered to 99. In keeping with the dual-language theme, 50 of these cards feature English text, while 49 are written in Japanese. A PSA 10 version of the Gold Refractor sold for $43,200 in 2021. A BGS 9 Japanese version sold for $9,000 on April 6 2025.

Rookie Refractors and a Lasting Hobby Legacy

Cards #111-200 were Rookie Refractors, including four-time All-Star Jose Reyes and 2006 AL MVP Justin Morneau. Morneau’s card features the long-time first baseman as a catcher, the position in which he was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins

Reyes and Morneau are also part of the 2001 Bowman Baseball rookie class that included Albert Pujols. A PSA 10 Pujols RC from the set sold for $2,032.77 in February 2025.

Through product innovation, aided by the presence of Albert Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki, two of the greats of modern baseball, 2001 became a landmark year for Bowman Baseball.
