A 1966 Topps Batman rookie card sold for a staggering $45,000 Thursday night at Heritage Auctions, setting a new benchmark for any publicly sold Batman card. This sale eclipses the previous record of $28,200, held by another PSA 9-graded card sold in December 2021.

The card, one of only 13 graded PSA 9 with none graded higher, features the iconic artwork of Norman Saunders. Saunders, celebrated for his work on the Mars Attacks card set, contributed to the 1966 Black Bat series released by Topps. The series capitalized on the soaring popularity of Batman following the debut of the ABC TV show. The Batman card, designated as #1 in the set, has since become a coveted piece among collectors.

The high-profile sale highlights a burgeoning interest in non-sports cards, garnering increasing attention and commanding impressive prices. In June, a 1940 Gum Inc. Superman #1 card fetched a record $36,250, further cementing the trend.

Batman remains one of the most beloved superheroes globally, with his memorabilia achieving remarkable sales across various categories. The first issue of his self-titled comic series, Batman #1, has sold for over $2.22 million. Additionally, a box of 1966 Topps Batman cards featuring a visible “The Batman” #1 card sold for $93,000 in February 2024.
